AGGRAND Natural Liquid Fertilizer Generates Outstanding Corn Yield

Few enterprises are as time sensitive as farming. But for farmer Richard Ward of Seaman, Ohio, a combination of AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Liquid Fertilizer and AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime yielded his best crop ever, even though he planted late.

Ward has been using AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Liquid Fertilizer and AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime for seven years on a variety of crops with great success.

This year, because of other obligations, Ward wasn't able to plant his corn until the third week of June. On top of that, he planted the corn in a field that had been used to graze cattle and had't been fertilized in the 47 years he has lived on the farm.

To make up lost time, Ward sprayed on a popular herbicide to defoliate the field. Three days later, he "no-tilled" the soil with a corn blender.

Immediately after planting (Bio-G) the corn, it began to rain and Ward couldn't spray the AGGRAND 4-3-3/Liquid Lime mix as he wanted. High temperatures (100 degrees F) followed the rain in the southern Ohio area.

During the hot spell, Ward decided to use a higher concentrate of the AGGRAND 4-3-3 Natural Liquid Fertilizer and AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime because he knew he was only going to be able to fertilize once. Using a 200-gallon spray tank mixed with 4 gallons of 4-3-3 and 4 gallons of liquid lime he fertilized the 5 acres of corn.

"I only needed to fertilize once," Ward said. "The corn never stopped growing."

By the Fourth of July the corn was knee high. By the third week of July, Ward's corn was chest and by the first and second week in September the corn was tasselling and was matured (denting) by the third to fourth week of September.

"These cobs are as big around as soda pop cans and 12 to 14 inches long," Ward said. "The yield was great because there were so many kernels on each cob."

An added benefit to the exceptional corn crop was the stimulation of dormant clover that grew between the rows. Although Ward didn't remember clover having been there, it seemed a combination of the AGGRAND 4-3-3/liquid lime mix, the right amount of rain and the higher than normal temperatures stimulated clover growth. Ward was happy about the clover because he planned to harvest half the corn and leave the remaining corn and clover standing to feed the deer for hunting season.

"The AGGRAND products have been nothing less than fantastic," Ward said.

Prior to his introduction to AGGRAND natural fertilizer, Ward used high analysis chemicals (19-19-19, 6-24-24). Facing rapidly rising prices of chemical fertilizers and fuel, lower yields and the amount of time spent in the field tending to crops, AGGRAND becomes a "no brainer," Ward said.

"I've been farming my entire life and I've had my ups and downs like everybody else," Ward said. "But I'll tell you I have never experienced the consistently impressive results I've had with AGGRAND 4-3-3 and AGGRAND Natural Liquid Lime during these past six or seven years. It exceeds all of my expectations.

Richard Ward of Seaman, Ohio was originally featured in the November/December 2000 AGGRAND News for his success using 4-3-3 on his corn. His corn continues to prosper. On July 1, 2000 he planted 120-day field corn and used AGGRAND 4-3-3. By September his corn was fully mature at six to seven feet tall.

Richard recommends three ounces of AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer 4-3-3 for every gallon of water and applying it to the soil after seeding. Foliar spray the corn when it is 14 to 16 inches tall and again when it is tasseling.

"The corn will take off and not stop growing until it's ready to be picked," said Ward. "AGGRAND 4-3-3 is so impressive that people slow down to look at my corn. Then they stop to ask what I did to get it to look so good. I tell them the difference is that I use AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer."

Growing Corn With AGGRAND Natural Liquid Fertilizer

Corn is a heavy feeder and requires large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is usually the limiting factor in corn production throughout the season while phosphorus and potassium are important during early plant growth and development when soil conditions limit uptake. Corn responds best to AGGRAND fertilizers when they are applied in banded applications at planting and as foliar applications after emergence.

Banded Applications

Per-acre mix ratio: 2 gallons AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer and 50 gallons of water at planting. The addition of 1 gallon AGGRAND Liquid Bonemeal may be beneficial, especially when soil phosphorus levels are below 30 ppm.

Foliar Applications

Per-acre mix ratio: 1 gallon AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer and 30 gallons of water. Apply as a fine mist with enough solution to thoroughly cover leaves. Increase spray volume as crop develops to ensure thorough coverage. Perform first application when plants are 4-6" tall.

Repeat when plants are 18-24" tall. Increase the application rate if leaves are chlorotic. A third application could be performed when a few tassels are just starting to show, but this application can only be applied by aircraft, a high-boy or through an irrigation system. Another option is to apply AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer when plants are 4-6" tall, 10-12" tall and before the crop is too tall to enter the field (18-24"). Space the applications at least 10 days apart.

Rates vary according to soil fertility, cropping history and other inputs that are available. Lower dilution rates are more effective than higher dilution rates. Two or three lighter applications may be more effective than one heavy application. If other constraints only allow one trip over the field, do not exceed 4 percent dilution rate (4 gallons AGGRAND Fetilizer to 96 gallons of water).

To reduce susceptibility to attack of insects and disease-causing organisms, apply a per-acre mixture of 1 gallon of AGGRAND Natural Fertilizer and 25 gallons of water when signs of infestation become apparent.

Soil Applications

Per-acre mix ratio: Mix 3 gallons of AGGRAND 4-3-3 in 75-100 gallons of water. Apply the solution to one acre. Apply in spring and fall.

AGGRAND Quick Hay and Pasture Reference

Depending on the results of a soil test, and aside from other amendments that may be required for soil balancing, AGGRAND 4-3-3 Liquid Fertilizer and AGGRAND Liquid Lime should be mixed at the rate of 1 gallon of each per 25 gallons of water and applied with agitation and/or recirculation to one acre of pasture at green-up in spring and after each cutting or grazing period when new growth reaches 4 to 6 inches.
